Clark Strickland from the College of Arts & Media speaks with freshmen about the upcoming school year at the Aug. 17 new student orientation on Ninth Street Park.
The downtown Denver campus is on pace to tally its largest freshman class. About 1,050 freshmen have enrolled to date, putting UCD on target for a 10 percent increase compared to fall 2006. There also are 945 transfer students enrolled. College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Associate Dean Brenda Allen, Provost Mark Heckler, student services staff and myriad faculty greeted about 100 of the new students at New Student Orientation Aug. 17 at Ninth Street Park. The incoming class, whether as freshman or transfers, help build a student population that comes from all 50 states and several international communities. Admissions reports the number of diverse students stayed similar to 2006, with a 23 percent enrollment increase in Hispanic students. Women make up 58 percent of the student population, with men, obviously, making up 42 percent. (More story, photos)

He has no interest in the unrefined scrawls of Sharpie-toting taggers or the territorial marks of gang graffiti writers, but good urban art catches his eye. Rather than decrying all graffiti as blight that must be quickly covered up, Parmar suggests we take a new look at the bold gestures of Denver’s underground creative class and help young taggers mature into artistic contributors to urban culture.
