Approximately 175 faculty, staff and students from the campus community chose to mark the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, at a lecture presented by former Sen. Gary Hart. The lecture, “9-11: Five Years On,” touched on a variety of topics including: national security, counter terrorism, the constitutional balance of power, international relations and dependence on foreign oil.

Out and About

Fall Festival, Student Activity Fair, welcoming women faculty, Study Abroad Fair and Celebration of Excellence are a few of the festivities on campus the past month.

CASMIC: Math + science = global growth
The past several years, education has suffered a decrease in funding in Colorado and nationally. In the meantime, international investments in education have increased, causing the United States to fall behind in the global economy.
CASMIC, the Center for Applied Science and Mathematics for Innovation and Competitiveness, aims to remedy that.

Excellence:
Choi masters film, medical breakthroughs

Draping cloth or tousing hair, training medical students or detecting Alzheimer’s disease—these diverse activities are at the core of Min Choi’s award-winning research in computer graphics.
For his innovative and important work, Choi was chosen the campus-wide Excellence in Research and Creative Activities award recipient for 2006. School/college/library winners: Jeffrey Beall, Mary Coussons-Read, Peter deLeon, John Hull, Philip Joseph, Nancy Leech, Naci Mocan, Zhiping Walter, Ping Xu

Building a better path to tenure
The tenure process just got a little friendlier with the introduction of the Tenure Track Faculty Mentoring program at the UCD downtown Denver campus. The program, headed by Professor Brenda J. Allen, master mentor and chair of the Department of Communications, and the Center for Faculty Development, was officially launched in the North Classroom Atrium on Sept. 21.

Gearing up for undergraduate experience
Enriching the Undergraduate Experience in a Research University, Oct. 6 at St. Cajetan’s, is the next step in enabling faculty, staff and administrators to ensure student satisfaction and involvement on the evolving downtown Denver campus. In its second year, the symposium this year features renowned author John Gardner as keynote speaker.

Outstanding:
Bellverie Ross

Women need to find success and peace of mind through independence, self sufficiency and financially stability. That’s the message Bellverie Ross has instilled in her four daughters and every woman whose life she has touched.

Thanks to raisin’ the best kind of ruckus, the downtown Denver campus alumni association was able to again bolster the educational dreams of undergraduates through its Alumni Association General Scholarship.
