Distinguished Staff and Faculty Award under way There are many stars shining on the downtown Denver campus, and the Academic Master Plan Linking Internal Communities committee and UCD administration have initiated a measure to celebrate colleagues. The first “Distinguished Staff and Faculty Award” award will be announced in November.
A breakfast toast to all outstanding staff John Semple and Betsy Metzger of Architecture and Planning enjoy breakfast hosted by the downtown Denver campus Staff Council. About 200 classified and professional exempt staff partook in the festivities. Between bites of pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and fruit, downtown Denver classified and professional exempt staff shared friendship and camaraderie at the annual Staff Appreciation Breakfast Oct. 25 at the Tivoli Turnhalle.

Mapping the undergrad experience Every great research institution needs a great undergraduate program, and UCD is no exception. “That’s what we’re here for,” stressed John Gardner, keynote at the second annual undergraduate experience symposium. Academic Athletes go the extra mile Athletics on a college level requires discipline, determination, training and hard work. The same qualities are necessary to become an Academic Athlete on the downtown Denver campus. A new, multimillion-dollar grant awarded to the University of Colorado by the National Institutes of Health for the study of pulmonary hypertension in children will include the creation of 200 patient-specific computer models that will be used to help refine diagnosis and improve treatment of the life-threatening disease.
Mark your calendar . . . - The downtown Denver campus is getting the word out about the many, many opportunities and degree programs available at Fall Open House, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Faculty and staff volunteers are asked to be at the PE Event Center at 10:30 a.m. to set up and enjoy a continental breakfast. (Information)
- In celebration of the launch of the third annual “One Book, One Denver” program, this year featuring The Milagro Beanfield War, but John Nichols, the community is invited to a “Power Reading” featuring UCD faculty beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at The Lab at Belmar. (Information)
- The next Project Valentine creation day will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Colleen Anderson’s Woodside Village Clubhouse, 8335 E. Fairmount Drive, Denver. - Join the staff from admissions, registrar, financial aid, and bursar for a “Campus Scoop” forum Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Wednesday, Nov. 8, covering important topics for staff involved with student support services, advising, billing, and enrollment. (Agenda)
- The sixth annual Strike It Rich dinner to raise funds for the E-Learning Center in the Auraria Library will feature former Sen. Gary Hart as keynote speaker and Sam Scinta, associate publisher and vice president of Fulcrum Publishing, as master of ceremonies. The dinner is Wednesday, Nov. 8, cost is $120 per person and reservations are required. (Information)
- The Sustainable Campus Fair, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Tivoli Turnhalle, is an educational outreach event that promotes the use of clean energy, community sustainability, and energy conservation. (Information)
