Finding hope in tragedy's wake
As the terrifying images of the Virginia Tech shootings continued to flicker across media screens, students countered their feelings of loss and helplessness by grieving as a community and lighting the fires of hope. More than 140 students, student services personnel and faculty attended a candlelight vigil at Campus Village to honor and support the victims and survivors of the campus shootings April 17.
Vigil attendees and campus community members wrote words of condolence, grief, hope and comfort on several banners that were then sent to Virginia Tech. Tributes for the victims continued across campus as UCD took part in Gov. Bill Ritter’s moment of silence at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20.

About 80 posters and presentations of undergraduate and graduate research were selected for display in the North Classroom for the 10th annual Research and Creative Activities Symposium on Friday, April 20. The event featuring 128 presenters—an all-time record—and keynote speaker Gov. Bill Ritter.
