SPA coaching key in Race to the Top
Assistant Dean Kelly Hupfeld joined Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien and others in evaluating Colorado’s chances for receiving federal education stimulus funds in an analysis by Education Week.

Professor Mary Guy was an invited speaker at a symposium on diversity held at the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at the City College of New York, October 29 – 30. The Symposium featured federal human resource executives and diversity scholars who presented their viewpoints on how best to achieve representativeness and equity in top level decision making posts in federal agencies. Discussions ranged from training to recruitment to succession planning and retention strategies.

The Colorado Certified Public Manager (CPM) Program website is now live! The SPA is excited to launch this new national program for the state of Colorado. CPM courses are designed to increase leadership capacity and skills for public and nonprofit sector professionals looking to advance their career and credentials.

Denver school choice a hit with students
Dean Paul Teske was quoted in a Denver Post story on November 2, 2009 on school choice in DPS. Teske was co-author, along with SPA Professor Jody Fitzpatrick and CEPA researcher Tracey O’Brien, of a national report, using Denver and DC survey data, on transportation barriers for families who want to exercise choice.

SPA alumnae Gloria Schoch was named the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year. Ms. Schoch is the Community Relations Director for First Data.

SPA Professor Emeritus Dr. John Buechner’s publication, “Who's Running This Town, Anyway? New Dimensions of Local Government Leadership" was discussed in a Denver Post article on the importance of local government and the leaders who run America’s cities and towns.

Phoenix Center at Auraria rises
Tears were shed and hearty congratulations were shared at the grand opening of the Phoenix Center at Auraria Thursday.
Barbara Paradiso, director of the Center on Domestic Violence at the School of Public Affairs, praised the 27 internal and external partners who collaborated to create the center, which will provide training, support, information and advocacy services to stem the tide of relationship violence and stalking on campus.

What a difference a year can make
Jon Caldera, President of the Independence Institute, and Michael Huttner, founder and CEO of Progress Now, will reflect on the politics of our state and nation since the 2008 election in an informal panel moderated by the School of Public Affairs Director of Communications, Diane Carman.

P-20 Education Lecture Series
Come for an informative lecture with a leading UK educator. Paul Kelley is the founding Headmaster of Monkseaton High School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the first public trust school in the United Kingdom. Microsoft UK is the school’s corporate partner. The school is known for its pioneering approaches in foreign language teaching (now used nationally), the design of the school environment (their new facility just opened after years in less than adequate facilities), spaced learning of mathematics and science, and creative uses of technology.
